Birthlight’s founder

Françoise Freedman

Françoise Freedman

The Founder and Director of Birthlight, Françoise Barbira Freedman is a medical anthropologist at the University of Cambridge, where she does research and teaches as an affiliated lecturer in the Department of Social Anthropology.

After spending long periods of fieldwork in Peruvian Amazonia, including two pregnancies and stays with her young family, she was inspired to share the gentle approach to parenting of her Amazonian hosts among friends in the UK. As a trained yoga teacher and therapist, Françoise used the idiom of yoga to create an original programmer of movements and nurturing relaxation for mothers to be and new mothers with their babies.

History

Teaching with Awareness

As a network, Birthlight is held together through shared values expressed in our Code of Ethics and Good Practice:

  • ‘Mothering the Mother’ from pregnancy through to nurturing infants
  • We care for parent and child together and promote positive interaction before and after birth
  • We teach with awareness and respect for each individual and to build confidence and trust
  • Our focus is on promoting wellbeing with techniques that reach people’s hearts and engage them to ‘create community’ in the margins of local health and social services.
  • Within boundaries of professional ethics we create circles of friendship at all levels within the birthlight training structure

History

Continuity

By offering a continuity of support and classes from fertility yoga to toddler yoga, Birthlight teachers and parents can progress together following the natural stages of pregnancy, birth, postnatal recovery and early years parenting . Our Yoga Therapy courses focus on enhancing women’s health impaired by birth complications or by chronic conditions before and after childbirth all the way to menopause.

Birthlight offers original adaptations of classic yoga practices for women from pre-conception through to nine months after childbirth. We strive to enable women to give birth with minimal intervention but we acknowledge that this may not be possible for all women. What we value most is the physical and emotional nurturing of pregnant women so that they can approach labour and birth with calm confidence, energised from a vibrant core strength and with full use of their breathing capacity. ‘Mothering the mother’ is an essential foundation for a woman’s ability to nurture her baby.

Birthlight offers original adaptations of classic yoga practices in water as Aqua Yoga. In water, yoga is made more accessible irrespective of fitness. Aqua Yoga increases mobility for all, whether beginners or advanced yoga practitioners, tentative or confident swimmers. In contrast to other forms of water exercise in which the water is mostly used for resistance, Aqua Yoga fluid moves are based on all the qualities of water. Aquanatal Yoga Levels 1 and 2, together with the Aqua Yoga Therapy short course, constitute a comprehensive professional training.

The birthlight Baby Yoga training consists of Baby yoga level 1 and Baby yoga level 2 courses complemented by three short courses: Nurturing baby massage, Toddler yoga and Special baby yoga. All these courses together are registered under the label ‘Birthlight Baby Yoga’.

Birthlight baby swimming courses bring together principles of body balance in water, swimming teaching techniques, research on the teaching of water safety skills for babies and the positive effects of joyful parent-baby interaction on overall child development.
There are several training courses within the Baby Swimming teacher training course area: Baby swimming diploma, Toddler swimming, Special baby swimming and Advanced study day.

The gentle yoga therapy developed by Françoise Freedman to respond to unmet needs related to women’s health and wellbeing before and after childbirth is based on original micro-movements that benefit the neuro-endocrine and reproductive systems. The birthlight Well Woman training area includes the Well Woman Yoga Diploma, the Fertility Yoga short course and the Yoga for pelvic health short course.
